AUDIO: Vybing on The Korner with Minori
On a regular, The Korner features young and emerging artistes doing their thing. Today, The Korner is shining the spotlight on singer Minori, a sister making music with a rich legacy in mind.
Minori Izumi Russell born of parents Dawn Marie Hall and Samuel Russell has had an un-dying passion for music from a very tender age. She has been dominating local talent competitions, entering from as early as age 7, singing, dee-jaying and dancing.
Growing up was not without its struggles as she grew up in the very volatile community of (Kingston) Water House “Samacan” to be exact, experiencing a lot of loss and violence, she always used music as a tool to express her frustrations and bring light to her experiences growing up. The singer/songwriter grew up listening and loving all genres of music from Bob Marley to Nat King Cole and a host of other artistes all of whom influenced her music today.
After graduating high school she got her first major show singing on a charity event held at the popular Indoors Sport centre Kingston Jamaica, amongst world acclaimed Air Supply in which Dain Vassell, founder of (@legacy_mekas), was a part of the band that accompanied her on the show.
Recently the two long time high school (Pembroke Hall High) band-mates teamed up to released her single “Jah Jah“ produced by Dain Vassell (Legacy Mekas ) and Coldrigde Williams.
On the move, she auditioned for several competitions though no immediate success came and not to be deterred, the then 21 year old artiste went right into the studio and recorded her first single, “Me and You” which landed her a three-year performing contract with the Voices For Climate Change Education Group giving her the opportunity to tour the entire island. Working, assiduously on her craft she has become one of the favorites’ in the group.
Determined to be heard she again auditioned for the 2011 Taste Talent Trail where she made it out of thousands to the finals. She continued on her journey and in 2012 auditioned for the very popular Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall Competition where she again made it to the finals and was a crowd favorite. She has since been busy performing on shows all over the island with her most recent being the Super Promo event “Jammin” Reggae and Soul held at the Great Huts Resorts and is presently working on several projects with both local and international acts, one being the very tasteful project titled “Put Your Arms around Me” featuring New York born and RnB singer John Earl and has done work at the legendary Tuff Gong Studio.
The Jamaican born singer’s music is a colourful fusion of reggae, Jazz and RnB and her music quickly enthrals you due to the sheer power and messages behind her soulful melodies. One of her most recent projects “Never Stop Chant” has been receiving raving reviews both locally and internationally and has landed the Jamaican native several interviews with prominent radio stations both local and abroad alike. The singer has several singles as well as videos working on to be released in the coming year and she along with her team are very excited for the responses they have been receiving on her newly released single “JAH JAH”.
