Devon Thompson Provides Update on the Arrest of UIC’s President and Supporters
The vice president of the United Independent Congress (UIC), Devon Thompson, has issued an update regarding the arrest of the UIC President, Joseph Patterson and other supporters participating in a peaceful protest downtown Kingston on September 22.
The update from Mr. Thompson is as follows:
“As a reminder, the court date for all four accused is October 7th at St. Andrew Court House. Joseph L. Patterson is the only one that will be attending court on October 7th and on October 13th.
A lawyer has been retained for the case and the cost for the retainer and legal fees so far has topped JMD$550,000.00. Fines for the DRMA could top JMD$1,000,000.00 per person and the JCF is still sifting through videos to arrest more Jamaicans.
We do hope that the JCF does not follow through on its threats and that we do not lose these cases, but if we do, costs may very well exceed the budget placed within the gofundme. Therefore, we have no choice but to win this case, and the lawyer we have retained is intent on defending all four and any others to the best of his ability.
Winning the cases on these two court dates for all four is a good thing for Jamaica. It opens the door to more successful defence of everyone charged under the DRMA and the Public Order Act.
We want to thank everyone so far for your help and we truly appreciate it!” – Devon Thompson
Last week Wednesday, The president and other supporters were arrested by the police in an attempt to thwart “The UIC March On Jamaican Parliament Protest” , which received an overwhelming turn out and support from the Jamaican people home and abroad but very much to the chagrin of the government.
The protest, as indicated loudly and multiple times by the UIC leader and its supporters, is against mandatory vaccines which rang even louder in the chant “My Body, My Choice”.
A fundraiser has since been initiated by the UIC and team member, Sandra Mayne to assist in the legal process for all who have been arrested and if further arrests are made, according to the UIC’s gofundme page:
“The Jamaica Constabulary Force is also continuing its search to arrest more Jamaicans by reviewing video footage of the March on Gordon House. We intend to provide support for all freedom fighters who are currently being targeted by the police, even though they have committed no crimes.”
