THE KORNER

Poet in Motion: Vybing on The Korner with Kareen Weir

FAIM | January 23, 2019

On a regular, The Korner features young and emerging artistes doing their thing. FAIM shines the spotlight on artistes with an active FAIM profile for the week in which they are featured. This week, we’re vybing it with the poetic patois poet, Kareen “Reeni” Weir.

Jamaican contemporary artist Kareen Weir endeavours to be a teaching and living example of the positive products that come out of the Jamaican society through a visual celebration of the island’s uniqueness, which her art practice and writing are dedicated to.

Kareen is a visual scribe who is becoming increasingly known for her advocacy of the literary preservation of Jamaican Creole dialect, as well as the oral legacy and history of her Caribbean ancestors once removed.

Kareen gave a lethal dose of her patois prowess when she unleashed lyrically potent poetic patois at FAIM’s official launch in August 23, 2018 to thunderous applause following the end of her performance which was intermittently interrupted with cheers from the audience.

The following is an excerpt from Kareen’s catalog of literary compositions, Let’s show her some love.If you too would like to be featured on The Korner, send a snippet of your bio along with images and videos of you in action to bio@faimhub.com:

Poetic Patois Prose

Weh mek yuh cyaan talk?
Weh mek yuh stay suh?
Tell me nuh! How mah guh know?
Mi haffi wonder if a juss spoil yuh spoil certain way. Yuh spoil?

Suh mi supposed to able fi look inna yuh eye,
and tell yuh weh yuh see,
and tell yuh weh yuh feel,
but dweet gingerly suh we nuh rub di wrong parts and trigger anything?
Am I a seer?
Now anything weh get sore from we haffi tek we time and stretch it back out suh yuh nuh bind up like when yuh nyaam too much rice or flour. But as Jah liveth that was yuh diet, suh mi know yuh did bind up, and some kinda spirit did lay innah yuh cause yuh shit nuff zeen.
Weh yuh never did a tell we did a try exit in anoda way, and yuh hold it up inna yuh suh till yuh spend marathons pon di latrine.

WHY WON’T YOU TELL ME YOUR STORY?!
I don’t know this side.
It’s not just you I don’t know; it’s me too.
Tell me more about you so I can know more about me. It sounds selfish, I know, but it’s necessary. We stand on the shoulders of our ancestors and you used to seat me on yours, so tell me: what is your story?

Catch Reeni live in action at FAIM’s upcoming event series, the new and exciting, iVYBZ: The Ultimate Dance Party-Open Mic Event Series on February 21, 2019.
